Botox® (Botulinum toxin type A) injections are now the UK’s no 1 treatment for facial lines and wrinkles simply because it really does remove the telltale signs of ageing.

Facial lines and wrinkles are caused by the repeated use of the underlying facial muscles, which over time results in a permanent crease or wrinkle. It is possible to reduce these lines by relaxing the action of the underlying muscle using Botulinum toxin (Botox®). Where it is injected it reduces the facial movements that result in wrinkling. This gives a smoother, more rested appearance to the face. Botox® has a preventative effect when used repeatedly to reduce the onset of wrinkles forming in the long term. Botox treatments are designed to smooth dynamic wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes, they do not affect your facial expression. The final result can be tailored to each patient and can be discussed at the initial consultation. Botulinum toxin is a prescription medicine, thus treatment can only take place after an initial consultation. As an Independent Nurse Prescriber Beverley Jenik is fully qualified to prescribe and administer your medicine.

What is Botox®?

A natural purified protein, which prevents fine lines and deep wrinkles from appearing. It relaxes wrinkle causing muscles. It creates a smoothed, rejuvenated appearance.

What areas can be treated?

The most popular areas to treat are the vertical frown lines (glabellar), horizontal forehead lines and the crow’s feet.

Botox® is also used to treat the masseter muscles, which become painful when you clench or grind your teeth, the chin (dimpling) and neck lines. Botox® is licensed to treat Hyperhidrosis, a condition of excessive sweating.

What does the procedure involve? Does it hurt?

Several injections are administered for each area and feels like an insect bite or as some patients describe similar to having their eyebrows plucked. Some patients feel no discomfort at all.

What should be expected after Botox treatment?

Botox is a safe treatment for wrinkles with little down time associated with the treatment. A slight reddening and swelling at the injection site is visible temporarily but you can return to work as these will disappear quickly.

How long does Botox last?

Muscle relaxation lasts between 3 - 4 months. The longer you have Botox treatments the longer the results last. The treatment will show an effect within 3-10 days following injection.

Is Botox safe?

Botox® has an excellent safety profile. The doses used in aesthetic applications are very small and the risks of adverse effects related to its mechanism of action are consequently low.

Side effects are rarely serious and always temporary, which is why it is now the most popular cosmetic treatments in the world, with over 1.6 million treatments performed last year.

What are the side effects of Botox?

Like all treatments involving injections there can be some bruising and minor swelling at the site of injection.

If side effects do occur they are temporary and mild to moderate symptoms such as headaches. Eyelid drooping is a rare occurrence and can be minimised by accurate dosage, proper placement, as well as keeping in an upright position for 3 hours after treatment.
